Security Alert Disrupts Play

The incident occurred in Fujairah, approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Dubai. Players and officials were forced to leave the court as debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire in an oilfield about 15km (nine miles) from the tournament venue. The interruption came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, following strikes by the United States and Israel and retaliatory actions by Iran.

Dramatic Scenes on Court

Footage from the ATP website showed Japan’s Hayato Matsuoka and Russia’s Daniil Ostapenkov scrambling off the court mid-match, along with the umpire and line judges. I just finished my match in Fujairah, second round, but the play is suspended for today, said Ukrainian player Vladyslav Orlov on Instagram. When I was playing, I heard the sound of the jets flying here and there. And there is smoke here, next to the mountain, so not very safe here right now….

Tournament officials could be heard instructing everyone to evacuate the facility immediately.

Official Response and Safety Measures

“Following consultation with local authorities and security advisors, play has been cancelled for the remainder of the day as a precautionary measure,”

The incident follows recent Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting the UAE in response to US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The situation remains tense. The disruption also impacts players traveling to other tournaments, with some reportedly stranded in Dubai due to airspace closures.
