Fagiano Okayama Pursues Global Strategy for J1 League Survival
Okayama, I don’t care if people laugh at me and call me an idiot,
Masamichi Yamada, the FD (football director) said, with a serious look in his eyes. Fagiano Okayama has embarked on an ambitious vision of connecting with overseas countries
while aiming to establish a firm foothold in the J1 League. This includes plans for a European camp, participation in the U-21 J League, inviting a Spanish coach, and sending young players abroad. This initiative isn’t merely about strengthening the squad; it’s a survival strategy for a local, citizen-supported club in a J.League landscape increasingly dominated by financial power.
“Survival Strategy” Extends Beyond J1 Establishment
Fagiano Okayama is initiating a new challenge as Japanese soccer undergoes changes in 2026.
President Yu Morii outlined the club’s policy at a press conference on January 9th.
Staying in J1 is not something that can be achieved in one year. While continuing to hold up the word “settled in J1,” we would like to craft this year a solid foundation for establishing ourselves in J1.
In 2024, under coach Takayuki Kiyama, the team finished 5th in the J2 regular season, winning both the semi-finals and finals of the J1 promotion playoffs to achieve promotion to J1 after 16 years. In 2025, their first year in the top flight, Fagiano Okayama defied expectations, finishing in 13th place and securing their J1 status.
Transfer Revenue as a Potential “Fourth Pillar” of Income
President Morii identified connections with overseas
as crucial for establishing the team in J1, alongside achieving 5 billion yen in sales as soon as possible
and strengthening the development of academy players.
Masamichi Yamada, appointed Football Director in December 2025, elaborated on the connections with overseas
strategy.
In order for the club to survive, we have to connect with overseas. That’s the conclusion we came to (during our discussions), and we both thought so. (President) Morii-san and we (Strengthening Club) also thought it was necessary.
This strategy is linked to a fundamental prerequisite for the club’s survival in a J.League environment where major companies are acquiring clubs and investing heavily in player acquisitions and stadium upgrades.
As a local civic club without a parent company, Fagiano Okayama relies on sponsorship revenue, ticket sales, and merchandise sales. However, sponsorship opportunities are limited by the local economy, stadium capacity at JFE Hare no Kuni Stadium is around 15,000, and increasing merchandise sales presents challenges. The club hopes to generate a new revenue stream through transfer fees and solidarity contributions.
Aligning with the J.League’s European Focus
Fagiano Okayama’s strategy aligns with broader trends within the J.League. The league established a European base in London in 2024 (J.LEAGUE Europe), launched an overseas leader invitation project in 2025 featuring Roger Schmidt as Global Football Advisor, and will transition to an autumn/spring season in 2026 to align with European leagues.
Fagiano Okayama will participate in a European training camp in Austria in July 2026 and will also join the U-21 J League, established for youth player development in the 2026-27 season.
[About U-21 J League participation]
We would like to inform you that Fagiano Okayama is scheduled to participate in the “U-21 J League”, which will be established from the 2026/27 season, as announced by the J League today.https://t.co/qp46PPYx06#FagianoOkayama— Fagiano Okayama staff official (@fagiano_koho) May 27, 2025
The J.League is also advocating for connections with other countries. I actually went on a camp tour with Mr. Morii, and even there I felt like, “This is what it’s all about, after all.” Then the president waved the flag, saying, “Let’s do this together!“
The club’s future hinges on its ability to capitalize on international opportunities.
