Timber Header Secures Vital Win for Arsenal, Extends Premier League Lead
Jurrien Timber’s second-half header was enough to edge victory against Chelsea and restore Arsenal’s five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Match Recap
In a breathless affair, Arsenal took the lead when William Saliba nodded in his first league goal of the campaign, though Chelsea pegged them back in first half stoppage time when Piero Hincapie inadvertently diverted a header into his own net from a corner.
But set pieces continued to dominate proceedings and Arsenal regained the lead through Jurrien Timber. After Pedro Neto was red-carded with 20 minutes to proceed, outstanding saves by David Raya were required to secure the win and extend Arsenal’s unbeaten run against Chelsea to 11.
Set Pieces Prove Decisive
Arsenal aggressively pressed the Blues backline in the opening stages. They got in front on 21 minutes when Bukayo Saka whipped a corner across a crowded penalty area which Robert Sanchez couldn’t get near. Gabriel kept the attack alive by heading the ball back inside to Saliba, who nodded it goalwards and found the net.
However, set pieces continued to be a problem for both sides and Chelsea equalized before the break. David Raya was forced to make a superb save to prevent Declan Rice deflecting in a Reece James corner, but the resulting delivery by the Blues captain was flicked backwards by Hincapie and looped into his own net.
Timber’s Winning Goal
Arsenal needed something to regain the lead, and they did so on 66 minutes from another corner. Rice sent the ball into the area, and Timber headed it in.
This was Arsenal’s 16th goal from a flag kick in the Premier League this season, equaling the divisional seasonal record with nine games still to play.
Raya’s Heroics and Final Moments
The encounter took another twist when Neto received a second yellow card for attempting to chop down Gabriel Martinelli. With the extra man advantage, Arsenal looked to seal the win, but Sanchez saved well to deny Ebere Eze.
In the closing minutes, Moises Caicedo’s thunderbolt whistled over the bar, and Raya made further heroics to deny Alejandro Garnacho. A late goal from Liam Delap was correctly flagged offside as Arsenal clung onto the three points.
