Potential Departures Loom for Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks could be poised for significant changes ahead of the NHL trade deadline, potentially involving key players with expiring contracts. General Manager Patrik Allvin may consider trading pending unrestricted free agents, including Evander Kane, Teddy Blueger, and David Kämpf.

Though, trading pending UFAs isn’t a certainty for the organization, as demonstrated by past decisions.

Evander Kane’s Situation

Evander Kane has indicated a desire to play with Elias Pettersson, telling GM Patrik Allvin that he expects to play with Pettersson on the first-line in order to make the biggest impact. He was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in June 2025.

Blueger’s Desire to Remain a Canuck

While Kane and Kämpf appear open to potential moves, Teddy Blueger has expressed a strong desire to stay with the Canucks. My wife and I have talked about it, so we’re at peace with whatever happens,” Blueger told Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. We’d love to stay. We love the city. But if something happens, hopefully you’re going to a playoff team that has a chance to go on a run. But there’s no point stressing about it.”

Blueger joined the Canucks as a free agent in the summer of 2023 after winning a Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights. Despite injury setbacks, he has been a productive player when healthy, leading the Canucks in goals (four) and points (seven) since returning to the lineup on January 21st. Through 10 games this season, he has five goals and eight points.

The Value of Keeping Blueger

The Canucks could potentially receive a third-round pick for Blueger, considering his limited games played before the deadline. However, there’s value in retaining him as a leader and a player willing to hold teammates accountable. He recently said back on Feb. 5 that I think we’ve got to find some character in our group…probably some more respect for each other, some appreciation to be in this league.”

There is a possibility of trading Blueger and then re-signing him as a free agent, but that scenario is uncommon.

The Canucks face a delicate balancing act as they navigate the trade deadline, weighing the potential benefits of acquiring assets against the value of retaining key players and leadership within the locker room.
