Heat Aim to Avoid Play-In Tournament as Health Improves
Published: February 22, 2026
The Miami Heat (31-27) are determined to avoid the NBA play-in tournament for a fourth consecutive season, with recent victories and improving player health bolstering their chances of securing a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference.
Recent Successes
Miami’s recent 136-120 win over the Memphis Grizzlies marked their third consecutive victory, representing their first three-game winning streak since a four-game run between December 26 and January 1. This momentum comes at a crucial time as the Heat look to solidify their playoff position.
Guard Norman Powell emphasized the importance of winning, stating, The only thing that matters is winning. I think that’s the most important thing. And I think we’re really starting to believe in the collective effort, trusting each other and working on the game.
Health a Key Factor
A significant factor in the Heat’s recent success is improved player availability. Obviously, it’s also important that we’re all finally healthy. I think it’s the moment we’ve been the healthiest all year. And we just wish to continue building that chemistry and do all the little things that help us win these games, without making mistakes and without losing sight of our goal of avoiding playing in the play-in,
Powell added.
The team currently holds the seventh position in the Eastern Conference standings. Following the Grizzlies win and a Magic loss, the Heat surpassed Orlando in the standings.
Looking Ahead
Miami is a few percentage points behind the sixth-place Philadelphia 76ers (30-26) and three games behind the fifth-place Toronto Raptors (33-23). The Heat have remaining games against both the 76ers and the Magic, with tiebreaker implications at stake.
According to Basketball Reference’s playoff odds report, Miami has a 71.4% chance of finishing among the top six teams in the Eastern Conference and qualifying directly for the postseason, with a 32.5% chance of finishing fifth.
Team Effort
The Heat recognize the need for a collective effort to achieve their goals. We want to gain out of the play-in, so we are focused on that. We recognize what we have to do. Obviously, we don’t expect or want someone to reach and help us. It’s all up to us. So we have to know what we can control as a team, go out there, play our style and do our best.
said Powell.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed optimism about the team’s potential, noting they’ve been at their healthiest in months. I have a lot of positive feelings about our team and our depth. We’ve done it all season, when some players have been out. We have to build and accumulate victories.
Spoelstra stated.
With 24 games remaining, the Heat believe they have a significant opportunity to secure their playoff positioning.
Synergy Building Between Herro and Jakucionis
Following his return from a rib injury, Tyler Herro is developing a promising synergy
with rookie Kasparas Jakucionis. Spoelstra noted the potential of the duo, saying, Obviously, we haven’t seen a lot of them, just because of the availability, but skill level, talent, offensive talent, just without them spending a ton of time together, you can see how there can be a synergy.
He further observed that Jakucionis is a playmaker…he was just looking for Tyler like every time
on the court.
