Vietnamese Badminton Player Nguyen Hai Dang Rises in Global Rankings
Ho Chi Minh City native Nguyen Hai Dang is rapidly ascending the ranks in international badminton, currently holding a world ranking of 65 as of October 2025. His journey, beginning with casual play with his brother, has transformed into a dedicated pursuit of professional success.
From Local Courts to International Competition
Hai Dang’s initial foray into badminton was purely recreational, following in the footsteps of his older brother. He quickly demonstrated talent, achieving success in school and amateur tournaments. Around the age of 17-18, he committed to a professional career in the sport.
Navigating Challenges on the World Tour
Competing internationally presents unique hurdles for Hai Dang. He often travels and competes without a coach, and frequently without speaking the local language. From a young age to now, I have almost exclusively competed abroad. Win or lose, no one shared my feelings, but the more competitions I competed, the more I got used to it and became more confident,
Hai Dang explained.
Financial constraints necessitate self-sufficiency in travel arrangements, including flights and accommodation. He acknowledges the advantages enjoyed by athletes with larger support teams, but uses it as motivation to train harder and learn from his international counterparts.
Overcoming Obstacles and Family Support
Initially, Hai Dang’s family was hesitant about a career in professional sports, viewing it as overly demanding. However, his consistent success, both domestically and internationally, eventually earned their full support. A significant milestone came in March 2023 when he climbed to 163rd in the world rankings with 8,910 points.
This achievement also marked a turning point, establishing him as Vietnam’s top-ranked badminton player, ending Tien Minh’s 21-year reign.
Recent Successes and Future Goals
2025 proved to be a breakthrough year for Hai Dang. He reached the quarterfinals of the YONEX SUNRISE Vietnam Open 2025 and the semifinals of two Super 100 tournaments: the Al Ain Masters 2025 and the Indonesia Masters II 2025.
Looking ahead, Hai Dang aims to climb into the top 50 in the world rankings and qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in the USA. He is currently preparing for the Singapore International Challenge 2026, continuing his rigorous training regimen even during the Tet holiday.
