Bates Women’s Tennis Falls to Caltech in West Coast Clash

PASADENA, Calif. – The Bates College women’s tennis team dropped a 6–1 decision to No. 33 Caltech Thursday night in Pasadena, California. Despite the loss, Iris Westmoreland delivered a standout performance, earning the Bobcats’ only team point.

Westmoreland Secures Crucial Victory

Westmoreland secured the point with a three-set win at No. 1 singles. She began with a 7–5 first-set victory over Carissa Gerung before Caltech responded with a 6–1 second set. The match culminated in a decisive 10–2 victory for Westmoreland in a 10-point super tiebreak, putting Bates on the board against the nationally-ranked Beavers.

Doubles Competition

However, Bates showcased strong competition at No. 1 doubles, where Westmoreland and Emelyn Harris edged Gerung and Anna Szczuka 7–6 (14–12) in a closely contested tiebreak after splitting games in regulation. The Beavers secured wins at the remaining two doubles positions to take an early 1–0 lead.

Singles Setbacks

At No. 2 singles, Harris and Szczuka traded sets, with Harris taking the opener 7–5 and Szczuka responding with a 6–1 second set. Caltech ultimately won the match with a 10–7 victory in the super tiebreak. The Beavers completed the match with straight-set victories at positions Nos. 3 through 6.
