Golfer Eugenio López-Chacarra Pauses Career for Mental Health

Spanish Pro Takes Break After Struggles on Course

Madrid-native Eugenio López-Chacarra, the 25-year-old golfer who gained international attention in the LIV Golf league, has announced he will be taking a break from his career to prioritize his mental health. After a series of struggles on the course, the Spaniard decided it’s time to step back and focus on his well-being.

“It hasn’t been easy to accept. Lately, the biggest challenge hasn’t been physical; it’s been mental. I believe in being honest about the ups and downs and, right now, I need time to reset, heal, and take care of my mind so I can come back stronger, healthier, and truly prepared to compete. It hurts me to leave the competition, which is what I like the most, but sometimes the strongest thing you can do is listen to yourself.”

Recent Struggles on the Course

Chacarra’s decision comes amidst a recent slump in form. In four tournaments this year, he has finished 15th at the Dubai Invitational, 41st in Bahrain, and missed the cut in both the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and the final stage in the desert. These results are a far cry from his impressive victory at the Indian Open last March, which saw him secure a check for 4.88 million euros – the largest prize ever achieved by a Spanish athlete for a single competition.

From Amateur Star to LIVráscal

A talented amateur in the United States, Chacarra turned professional in the LIV Golf league, enticed by the generous financial offerings. He became the first Spaniard to win a tournament in the million-dollar competition, triumphing in Bangkok in 2022. However, his performance subsequently declined, leading to his demotion from the league’s Fireballs team.

Friendship with Donald Trump

Chacarra’s unusual career path and friendship with American president Donald Trump have also made headlines. “I am part of the Trump Golf family,” he told El País, “and I have a great relationship with them. I am lucky to know the president, I have played golf several times with him and he has been spectacular with me.”

A Road to Recovery

For now, Chacarra has withdrawn from the competition in Kenya, where he was planned to participate next week. The golfer aims to return to form and compete at the highest level once he has fully recovered, both physically and mentally.
