Greyhounds’ Missed Opportunities Haunt Them in Overtime Loss to Otters

In a tightly contested matchup, the Soo Greyhounds’ struggles to convert scoring chances ultimately led to a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss against the Erie Otters. Despite an improved effort from Thursday’s “stinker” against the Niagara IceDogs, the Greyhounds (29-15-1-2) couldn’t quite pull out the victory.

Greyhounds Leave Points on the Table

Coach John Dean summed up the game perfectly: “There was an opportunity to really bring the heat and get two points, but it’s not our night tonight.” The Greyhounds played well enough to win, but their inability to capitalize on scoring chances cost them dearly.

Erie Defender “Big Part of Their Win”

Dean credited Erie’s Noah Tegelaar, a former Greyhound, with a significant role in the Otters’ victory. “He played a great game and he’s a big part of their win tonight,” Dean said, acknowledging that Erie did a good job “clogging the O-zone.”

“If you don’t score on your first chance, it’s going to be tough to score on your second one,” Dean added, referring to the Greyhounds’ missed opportunities.

Game Summary

The Greyhounds opened the scoring with Chase Reid’s goal late in the first period. Erie tied it up early in the second, thanks to Jake Murray, and took the lead when Michael Dec scored later in the frame. Jeremy Martin tally with just over three minutes remaining in the third staved off defeat temporarily, leading to a shootout.

In the shootout, Erie’s McLean Agrette beat Sault goaltender Carter George in the fifth round, sealing the Otters’ victory. Tegelaar stopped four of five shooters he faced, while George made three saves.

Greyhounds Look Ahead to Brantford

The Greyhounds will continue their road trip on Sunday, facing off against the Brantford Bulldogs. They currently sit seven points behind the Windsor Spitfires for first place in the West Division, with a game in hand on both the Spitfires and the Flint Firebirds.

Greyhounds Play with Five Defensemen

The team suited up five defensemen for the game after veteran Spencer Evans received a three-game suspension for a slashing major against Niagara on Thursday. Tobias Zvolensky was inserted into the lineup in place of Evans.

Academic Success for Greyhounds’ Defenseman

Earlier in the day, Greyhounds defenseman Harris Pangretitsch was recognized as the West Division’s OHL Academic Player of the Month for January, posting a 95 per cent average in his Grade 12 studies at Superior Heights.
