Cork’s Golden Guard Conquers the Ages

Shane Coughlan, the charismatic guard from Blue Demons BC, has become the first Irish men’s player this millennium to be inducted into the Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame, capping off a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades.

From Teenage Sensation to All-Time Great

Coughlan began his Super League journey in 1998-99 as a teenager, and over the next 17 years, he contested a record 10 Super League Cup finals. His six wins in those finals, at an average of 14 points per victory, are a record tied only by his teammate and friend, Niall O’Reilly.

Cup MVP Magic

The only player to win back-to-back men’s Cup final MVPs (2003 & 2004), Coughlan clinched the cup for Demons by scoring game-winning baskets. He converted in both finals, against Belfast Star and Neptune, with a combined 18-point display.

Dominating Decade

Coughlan’s impressive resume includes three Super League titles (2005, 2009, 2015), and delivering the first three Champions Trophies (2013, 2014, 2015) to Demons. He ranks third in the most decorated players in men’s national league history, behind Neptune’s Tom O’Sullivan and Brendan O’Flaherty.

Style and Substance

Hailing from a hall-of-fame basketball family, Coughlan blended exceptional ball-handling, passing, and scoring abilities, making him an unstoppable force on the court. His early success – back-to-back U17 Billy Kelly tournament MVPs and an U19 National Cup title – foreshadowed his incredible longevity.

Even after that treble-winning 2015 season, Coughlan continued to inspire Demons, helping them to intermediate National Cup titles in 2017 and 2018.

Induction Day & Future Stars

Coughlan will be joined in the 2026 Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame class by Ken Black, Jerome Westbrooks, and Michelle Fahy. The quartet will be inducted at the Basketball Ireland Annual Awards ceremony on Saturday, May 23rd in Naas.
