Yakima SunKings: A Basketball Dynasty in Minor League History
From Kansas City to Yakima: A Journey of Excellence
The Yakima SunKings’ story begins in 1985, not in their namesake city, but in Kansas City, Missouri. Initially known as the Kansas City Sizzlers, the team spent its first season in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) before relocating to Yakima in 1990. Since then, the SunKings have become a staple in the North American minor league basketball scene.
Five CBA Titles and Counting
Over the years, the SunKings have crafted a legacy of excellence, winning the CBA championship five times: in 1994-95, 1999-2000, 2002-03, 2005-06, and 2006-07. The team’s success was so remarkable that even a two-season absence from 2008 to 2017 didn’t stop their winning momentum.
In 2005, the team was purchased by the Yakama Indian Nation. We became the Yakama SunKings. After winning back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007, economic losses forced the Yakama to abandon the team.
The Rebirth and Recent Success
In 2017, the SunKings were reborn, joining the newly formed North American Premier Basketball (NAPB), which later became The Basketball League. In their first season back, the SunKings claimed the regular season title and the championship, showcasing their enduring dominance. They continued their winning streak in 2018 as well.
