Jannik Sinner Cruises Past Bergs, Sets Up Clash with Cerundolo in Paris Masters 1000 Round of 16
Sinner’s Indoor Domination Continues
Jannik Sinner, fresh from his first-round bye, stormed into the round of 16 of the Paris Masters 1000 tournament. The Italian, who’s been on an indoor win streak since March 2023, dispatched Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-3 in just 68 minutes.
Sinner, who had been “bye” in the first round, conceded nothing, particularly in the service,”– Tournament Officials
Playing on indoor hard courts, Sinner, currently number 2 in the world, is eyeing the top spot, previously held by Carlos Alcaraz, who fell prey to an early exit. Sinner’s aggressive gameplan and relentless serving were too much for the Belgian, who held no break points throughout the encounter.
Sinner’s Path to the Quarterfinals
Sinner’s next challenge comes in the form of Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo (ATP 21). The 24-year-old Italian will be looking to extend his 22-consecutive indoor victories streak, dating back to the 2023 Masters final in Turin.
The South Tyrolean broke Bergs’ serve in the opening game, which lasted 12 minutes. He then dominated the second set, breaking Bergs’ serve twice to take commanding control of the match.
Bergs’ Campaign Ends; Goffin Falters in Qualifying
Bergs, the sole Belgian in the final draws, fell short against Sinner. Earlier, he had dismissed American Alex Michelsen (ATP 35) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round. Unfortunately for Belgian fans, David Goffin didn’t qualify for the main draw.
