Hanwha Eagles’ Choi Jae-hoon: From Unsigned to National Team Dream

Unlikely Journey to National Team

Choi Jae-hoon, a journeyman catcher for the Hanwha Eagles, has defied the odds and achieved a lifelong dream. The once unsigned player has been named to the national team roster for the upcoming K-BASEBEALL SERIES against the Czech Republic and Japan.

“I’m still calm,” Choi said, laughing. “People say that, but I’m really calm. I’m the guardian of Choi Jae-hoon’s children – that’s my mindset.”

From Afterthought toFall Baseball Veteran

Choi, who went undrafted in 2008 and spent several years as a Doosan developing player, has become a fall baseball veteran. With 20 postseason games under his belt, including 10 semi-playoff games, 6 playoff games, and 4 Korean Series games, his experience is invaluable.

“I was really nervous playing fall baseball for the first time in 2013,” Choi recalled. “But baseball is about enjoying yourself, and that’s what I try to do. I hope my juniors do the same – enjoy it, and they’ll do well.”

Eyes on Fall Baseball Success

Despite Hanwha’s failure to advance to the semi-playoff stage in 2018, Choi remains optimistic. “The pitching staff is really good,” he said. “If the fielders do their part, I think the pitchers will hold up well. The fielders should help.”

Stressing the importance of staying calm, Choi added, “Fall baseball is a different feeling. One mistake can cause a mental breakdown. If we stay calm and do what we’ve done, we’ll be okay.”
