Gaudreau Brothers’ Legacy Lives On Through New Foundation

In a touching tribute to the late hockey stars, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, their widows have announced the establishment of a new foundation in their honor.

Foundation Aims to Support Youth Hockey and Families in Need

On what would have been Johnny Gaudreau’s 32nd birthday, his widow, Meredith Gaudreau, along with her sister-in-law Madeline Gaudreau, announced the launch of the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation. The foundation will focus on three main initiatives:

  • Boosting youth hockey programs to help make hockey more accessible and affordable.
  • Supporting hockey families facing tragedies by offering assistance and resources.
  • Aiding families affected by drunk driving, a cause close to the Gaudreaus’ hearts following the brothers’ tragic passing.

“It’s Time to Pay It Forward”

“John’s impact was so far and wide. We have a big opportunity here to do a lot of good,” said Meredith Gaudreau, who spoke with the Calgary Eyeopener‘s Josh Pagé about the new foundation.

Foundation’s Timeline and Inspiration

The idea for the foundation was sparked as early as the funeral home, where Johnny’s agent suggested starting a foundation in his honor. The Gaudreaus took their time to ensure they could dedicate the necessary effort to make it a success.

“We took our time getting up and running because we had a lot going on. But it was just those very first days where we thought, we could really pay this forward in their honour, and here we are, ready to,” said Meredith.

Foundation’s Initial Success and Future Plans

The foundation has already raised a significant amount of money, with notable donations coming from fellow NHL players Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, and Zach Werenski, who requested donations to the foundation instead of wedding gifts.

“That blew me away. That almost gave me a drive to where I want to really do a good job at this and give back, because that’s extreme generosity,” said Meredith.

Legacy of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

Johnny Gaudreau, who played eight seasons with the Calgary Flames, remains a beloved figure in the city. The foundation aims to carry on his legacy and that of his brother, Matthew, who was also an accomplished hockey player and coach.

“We love Calgary so much. We miss you guys and you guys hold a very special place in our hearts,” said Meredith when asked about the love and support shown by Calgary.
