Keegan Bradley Stuns Tommy Fleetwood, Wins Travelers Championship
Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley staged a spectacular comeback Sunday, rallying from three shots behind with just four holes left to win the Travelers Championship and strengthen his case for the U.S. team in the September Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
Bradley’s Cinderella Finish
“I think I’m going to remember that one [the final birdie putt] the most,” Bradley said of his incredible closing birdie from under 6 feet. “Of all the shots I hit and all the putts I made, that’s the one I’ll remember.”
Bradley birdied the 15th hole from 35 feet, then holed the winning putt on the 18th to finish with a 2-under 68, while playing partner Tommy Fleetwood, who had the 54-hole lead, faltered with a final-hole bogey in a closing 72.
Tommy Fleetwood’s Heartbreak
Fleetwood, who had a chance to become the first wire-to-wire winner at the Travelers, came up just short in his quest for his first PGA Tour victory (0-84).
“It’s tough. Obviously, I hit a lot of good shots, and I’m playing really well,” Fleetwood said. “I’ve been in this position before, but it still doesn’t make it any easier.”
Bradley’s Ryder Cup Hopes Brighten
With the victory, Bradley moved up to No. 9 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. He has now won two tournaments against world-class fields in the last 10 months, matching the total of Scottie Scheffler, who is ahead of him in the standings.
Asked on the 18th green if he should be playing in the Ryder Cup, Bradley simply said, “Go USA!”
hız Russell Henley’s Honesty
Russell Henley finished tied for second after a closing 69, but the day and perhaps the tournament could have gone differently for him. In the second round, he called a one-shot penalty on himself for a ball that moved the length of a dimple while playing a chip. Henley notified the rules staff and added the penalty to his score.
Other Notable Finishers
- Harris English (65) tied for fourth with Jason Day (68), boosting his own Ryder Cup hopes.
- Scottie Scheffler (65), tied for sixth with Rory McIlroy (65), were three shots behind the winner.
