Swimming Record Breaks at Medina Club Test
Orense swimmer Rosario Dueñas broke the absolute provincial record of the 100 meter breaststroke at the first social test of the Medina Club, held in Orense’s Pavilion. Dueñas lowered her own youth and absolute provincial records to a time of 1 minute 24.6 seconds, defeating Remedios Anta, who finished with a time of 1 minute 26.6 seconds.
The event also saw the graduation of several Orense children who participated in the “No child without knowing how to swim” campaign. The new swimmers included first graders like Victoria Valeiras Freire and Ricardo Suárez Losada, and several others up to fourth grade.
Galician Karate Championships
Abelardo Pérez Gabriel and José Benito Vázquez, members of the Judo Club Orense, were crowned Galician Karate champions in the heavyweight and middleweight categories, respectively, at a tournament held at the Orense Sports Pavilion. Pérez and Vázquez represented Orense alongside other karatekas from El Ferrol and La Coruña.
The event also featured Juan Carlos Conde and Jerónimo Fernández in the lightweight category; Ernesto Araujo, José Benito Vázquez, and José María García in the middleweight category; and Abelardo Pérez Gabriel in the heavyweight category, all belonging to the Orense Judo Club.
Pérez and Vázquez’s Wins
Pérez and Vázquez showcased brilliant performances, securing their respective weight class titles. Ernesto Araujo, after losing to his teammate José Benito Vázquez in the middleweight category, went on to claim the runner-up spot in all categories.
Jerónimo Fernández and José María García performed well but did not advance past the first qualifying rounds, while Juan Carlos Conde, the reigning lightweight champion, had to withdraw due to injury.
Organizing and Refereeing
The Galician Federation of Judo and associated disciplines, led by Mr. Óscar Cacheiro, chaired the event, with Mr. Vázquez Mayo and Mr. Orencio Conde acting as referees. The competition was held in the completely packed Gymnasium of the Sports Pavilion.
Ponte B: The First Champion of the Season
In other local sports news, Ponte B became the first champion of the season in Ourense’s Third Regional Group, winning with two games remaining and securing promotion to Second under coach Martín Domínguez’s guidance.
Ponte B dominated its group, being the most scoring team with 81 goals and the second fewest goals scored. The team was undefeated at home and won five games away, drawing two and losing only one.
Forward Aguilar was the main offensive reference, scoring 23 goals. Ponte B’s success can also be attributed to its disciplinary aspect, with only one expulsion due to a double warning throughout the season.

The second edition of “Xantar” opened its doors at Expourense, with popular presenter José Manuel Parada as the crier. Meanwhile, Ourense garage-pop band The Easytones presented their new album, “Still make you take it easy,” at the Rock Club room.
