The Countdown Begins: European Women’s Roller Hockey Championship Set to Kick Off
With less than a month left, anticipation is building for the 16th edition of the European Women’s Roller Hockey Championship. This prestigious competition will take place in Olot, Spain, marking the fourth time the country has hosted the event after successful editions in Oviedo (1995), Alcorcón (2007), and Mieres (2013). From December 4 to 9, the Spanish team will defend their title, aiming to secure another victory.
A Battle of Nations
Seven countries will be vying for the championship: England, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, and the host nation, Spain. This year, the European Championship introduces a new competition system, divided into two distinct phases. The initial stage will feature a group format, with two tables formed based on selection coefficient:
Group A: Spain, France, Portugal, and Italy
Group B: Germany, England, and Switzerland
The Road to Glory
Following the group stage, the tournament will progress to the knockout quarterfinals. The top-ranked team from Group A will advance directly to the semifinals, while the remaining teams will compete in an elimination round. This round will pit the second-placed team from Group A against the third-placed team from Group B, the third-placed team from Group A against the second-placed team from Group B, and the fourth-placed team from Group A against the third-placed team from Group B. The competition will then proceed with the consolation phase, semifinals, match for third and fourth place, and the grand final.
Additionally, the European Committee of Rink Hockey Referees has appointed Rubón Fernández and Daniel Villar, both from Spain, as the referees for the championship.
