Interest is focused on the genetic disease that former national basketball team player Han Ki-beom confessed to.
Han Ki-beom recently appeared on the YouTube channel ‘Jung Ho-geun’s Life Church’ and revealed his family history of genetic diseases. He revealed that his father and younger brother passed away early in their 40s. The cause of death was cardiac arrest.
Han Ki-beom said, “I also have a bad heart,” and “I survived after two surgeries. Since my father suspected whether it was genetic or not, I also got tested and the doctor said, ‘I will 100% die, too. ‘”
The genetic disease that Han Ki-beom mentioned is ‘Marfan syndrome’. Marfan syndrome is a rare genetic disease that causes abnormalities in connective tissue and the cardiovascular system due to genetic defects. This disease was first described in 1896 by French doctor Jean Marfan, and has a characteristic appearance of being very tall, having long limbs, and having bulging eyes.
Marfan syndrome is caused by a mutation in the FBN1 gene, which causes a structural defect in an important protein called ‘fibrillin-1’, weakening connective tissue and causing various problems in the body’s organs.
Marfan syndrome can affect major structures of the body, particularly the cardiovascular system, and can cause serious complications.
Representative cardiovascular diseases include aortic dilatation, aortic dissection, atrial septal defect, and pulmonary hypertension. These cardiovascular abnormalities can be life-threatening, so early diagnosis and active management are important.
In addition to long limbs, tall stature, and cardiovascular disease, scoliosis and cataracts, in which the lens of the eye moves out of its proper position, are also major symptoms of Marfan syndrome.
As such, Marfan syndrome requires a detailed physical examination along with genetic testing because the symptoms are so diverse. In particular, it is diagnosed through a comprehensive examination of the heart, blood vessels, eyes, and skeletal structures. If there is a family history of Marfan syndrome characteristics, genetic counseling may also be considered.
There is currently no cure for this disease, so managing symptoms and preventing complications is important.
Smoking, excessive drinking, and high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of complications from this disease, so it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
